#YR’s Cane is going through an identity crisis that makes Ashley’s split personalities look like child’s play. Dive deeper into the problem here: Split Personality or… ? Young & Restless Tees Up an Identity Crisis for the Ages — What the Actual [Bleep]?
When Young & Restless reintroduced the character of Cane, it shaved almost 15 years off of him and took away his Australian accent. But at
least he had a goal — a clearly defined goal. He was going to take over all of Genoa City’s major corporations (never mind that that’s not the kind of thing that one can do just by saying, “Mine”). And now?

As of the October 8 episode (recapped here), Cane has scrapped his plans and informed Jack for no reason other than that he showed up at his choo-choo that he is giving himself a reset. All together now: Huh?
Cane is even contemplating destroying the AI software that he’s insisted would turn his unusually bustling Wisconsin town, if not the world, upside down. (So much for Phyllis’ blind faith in the erstwhile Aristotle Dumas. Then again, considering that her job seems to consist of nothing more than dining around town and bragging that the boss is large and in charge, maybe it’s no big loss?)

When we met Cane again, he was going on about how he was sure someone was going to try to kill him in his hedge maze. But literally no one did. And no one has. Damian died. Chance died. Eccentric Carter died. But none of them kicked the bucket because anyone at all was gunning for Cane.
And why would they? Saying “I’m taking away all your toys” doesn’t remotely equate to taking them away, and theoretically savvy execs like Jack and Victor would know that. (“That’s how Monopoly works, my dear boy, not the business world.”)
So who the [bleep] is Cane 2.0? He came in ill-defined, even now changes on a dime, and if he has one gift, it seems to be for aggravating everyone in his orbit with the exception of Phyllis, who these days comes off only marginally less obsessed than she did when she was Danny’s No. 1 fan.
We’re all in on reinvention and progress, Young & Restless. But at some point — hell, at any point — it has to make some semblance of sense.
Get a sneak peek at Thursday’s episode on your way to the comments to weigh in on whether you can make heads or tails of this malleable new Cane.
