Y&R’s Camryn Grimes Gives Her Perspective on Mariah’s ‘Act of Desperation’
Camryn Grimes opened up to Soap Opera Digest about how she views her current storyline as Mariah Copeland on The Young and the
Restless. The plot involving the kidnapping of Dominic Winters is the latest slip in Mariah’s grasp on reality. Grimes shared that Mariah’s actions are “deeply, deeply complicated and wrong,” but also shed some light on why Mariah has taken this turn.

Mariah’s mental health is at an all-time low on Y&R. She sought professional help after nearly killing a man in an effort to erase Ian Ward (Ray Wise) from her mind. But visions of him are now her constant companion. It’s led her to do the unthinkable, kidnapping Devon’s (Bryton James) son, Dominic (Ethan Ray Clark)—the child she carried for Abby (Melissa Ordway) and Chance (Conner Floyd).
When Dominic was a baby, Mariah had a hard time letting go. She’s the only person a part of his conception that didn’t get to lay claim to him as her child. Devon didn’t have to walk away because he and Abby fell in love. Chance retained his parental rights as Dominic’s adopted father. This left Mariah as the odd person out. Now, desperate to find some kind of solace, Mariah has chosen to fulfill the role she closed the door on with the child she carried.
Grimes, who experienced a full-circle moment wth this storyline, acknowledged that Mariah’s perception of reality doesn’t allow her to see her actions as wrong. To Mariah, what she’s doing is simple. She’s seeking happiness and trying to find it in being the mother to a child she loves. But from her own perspective on her character’s state of mind, Grimes said, “Not all the cylinders are firing. Let’s be very, very clear.”
