Sadly, despite his successful acting career, things quickly went wrong for the star. The 53-year-old was sadly declared bankrupt on July 9th of 2013, and kept his lack of funds secret from his partner Emma McKie, who discovered the bankruptcy through a series of unopened letters.

Days later, his body was sadly spotted near cliffs in Seaford, East Sussex. A post-mortem found no evidence of drugs in his system and only a small amount of alcohol – his cause of death was put down to multiple injuries.

At first, police couldn’t identify the body, which was found on July 12th. It wasn’t until the 17th that someone at the coroner’s office saw an online article about Paul’s disappearance and recognised him.

Speaking at the inquest into his death, his partner Emma said: “I do believe that Paul would take his own life. He had a darkness inside him that was irreparable.

“He was a proud man and he couldn’t have handled the bankruptcy becoming public knowledge. He would not have wanted to let me down or hurt me or his friends. The bankruptcy was the final straw after a life of major highs and lows.”
