Taylor Sheridan’s Sam Elliott Western Series Casting Has Now Been Outshined

Taylor Sheridan cast Sam Elliott in Landman season 2, but the executive producer of the Yellowstone franchise has an even more genius

casting of a Western movie legend. Sheridan cast Elliott as a co-lead of 1883, the first prequel of Taylor’s flagship Yellowstone series.

Sam Elliott joins Landman season 2 as the father of Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton). Sam and Billy Bob were both in 1883, and now they reunite in the oilfields of South Texas in Taylor Sheridan’s latest hit series on Paramount+.

Taylor Sheridan’s ability to cast A-list talent in his TV series began with Kevin Costner in Yellowstone. Huge names like Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sylvester Stallone, Jeremy Renner, Demi Moore, and Michelle Pfeiffer have since signed to star in various TV shows created by Sheridan.

Sam Elliott is an icon of Westerns in film and television, but Kurt Russell signing on to star in The Madison is an even more ingenious casting by Taylor Sheridan. The Madison is a present-day spinoff of Yellowstone about a family led by Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) settling in Montana’s Madison Valley river.

Kurt Russell’s casting in The Madison may be even more exciting, given it’ll be his first Western series since 1976’s The Quest. Russell’s early career saw him starring in several TV Westerns, and Kurt recently headlined Apple TV+’s Godzilla series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, alongside his son, Wyatt Russell.

Taylor Sheridan’s resume is built upon Western films like Hell or High Water and Wind River, and his TV empire includes several Westerns spawned from Yellowstone. Sheridan must be a fan of one of the greatest Western films ever, 1993’s Tombstone, since he has now cast three of that movie’s lead actors in his TV shows.

Sam Elliott and Billy Bob Thornton continue their acting rapport in Landman after starring together in Tombstone, and now Kurt Russell joins The Madison after also sharing the screen with Sam and Billy Bob in Tombstone.

If Val Kilmer, who played Doc Holliday in Tombstone, hadn’t passed away from throat cancer and pneumonia in 2005, Taylor Sheridan would probably have cast him in a Yellowstone project as well.
