terrorists across the U.S. border. As the war intensifies, a mysterious operative named Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) kidnaps a drug kingpin’s daughter — intentionally escalating the situation and throwing everything into chaos.

In addition to del Toro, Day of the Soldado also starred Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan and Raoul Trujillo, all reprising their roles from the first film. Superman star Isabela Merced, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Catherine Keener joined the cast in new roles. The film was directed by Stefano Sollima, who took over for Dune’s Denis Villeneuve, while Sheridan penned both films.

Day of the Soldado hit theaters in 2018 to generally positive reviews from critics, and it maintains a 62% approval rating from over 285 critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes almost a decade later. The site’s consensus calls the film a stylish and dynamic thriller, although admits it is “less subversive” than its predecessor.

As the critics’ reviews suggest, Day of the Soldado wasn’t as well-received by audiences as the franchise’s first installment. 2015’s Sicario is much more universally loved, with a Certified Fresh rating of 91% approval from 280 critics’ reviews, and an audience score of 85% from over 50,000 user ratings. The performance of Emily Blunt — who didn’t return for the sequel — was largely deemed a standout, with del Toro’s performance also earning high praise.

At the box office, Day of the Soldado proved to be on somewhat equal footing as its predecessor, although it wasn’t able to set any new records. The film earned $75.8 million worldwide during its run against an estimated $35–45 million budget. For comparison, the original Sicario was able to earn more with less — pulling in $84.9 million against a $30 million budget.

As Taylor Sheridan’s media empire continues to grow, rumors have been circulating following Day of the Soldado’s release about a third installment in the franchise. In 2018, before the film’s release, one of the producers revealed that a third film was in the works, and it was later revealed to be titled Sicario: Capos. Years later, the film has suffered setbacks due in part to the 2023 Writers Guilf of America strike. By late 2023, Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) was confirmed to be involved in the project.

Unfortunately, more concrete updates have not emerged in the years since, and it has yet to be confirmed if Sheridan will return for the third film, should it ever materialize. Sheridan currently has multiple projects on his plate, including writing and producing a Call of Duty film adaptation and continuing his Yellowstone universe with TV projects including Y: Marshals and The Madison.
