Rare Sighting of Underused Bold & Beautiful Character Shocks Viewers — and Begs a Question

Last week, Bold & Beautiful aired a couple of episodes that were even rarer than Luna-free ones: They included Zende, who has become in

essence the new Thorne, a character perpetually treated like a second-class citizen and trotted out with such infrequency that his appearances become mini-events.

“Yes, a Zende sighting!” cheered Cherr6177. “Gosh,” commented Puppysforever, “I thought he went on a photo safari with his parents.” Da1989 was simply “shocked to see Zende finally got out of his bunker!” Kay Schultz marveled that we “don’t see Zende hardly all year, [then] twice in one week.”

The reaction begs a question: Why isn’t Zende better utilized? It’s been five years since Delon de Metz took over the role from Rome Flynn, and the character has less screentime these days than even Donna. Zende got mixed up with the Buckingham sisters, briefly macked on Luna in one of soapdom’s all-time worst plots, and since then… nada.

What Happened to Quinn on Bold and Beautiful - Soap Opera Digest

Zende is a Forrester, for Pete’s sake, yet the outfits that have the fashion house all hyped up are a fresh-out-of-design-school Deke’s. Hope gets her line cut because of poor sales and a stretch during which she kept hitting on Steffy’s husband, then gets it reinstated while Zende… Has he ever had his own line?

The Five Most Unhinged Characters in Bold and Beautiful History - Soap Opera Digest

It’s a head-scratcher. Zende has a fascinating history, what with being adopted into one of the richest families in L.A. and then pushed aside in favor of others. (Remember when R.J. was “the chosen one”?) But the soap never addresses the fact that he’s treated like a B player. Wouldn’t Zende be ticked? Resentful?

Also, Zende used to be a player. He cheated on Maya’s sister Nicole and, off screen, blew up their marriage. And now? You’d swear he’d never so much as been on a date. Why hasn’t he asked out Ivy (who is biologically no relation) or Daphne (at least when Carter was treating her like a reliable standby)? Why isn’t the show giving us even a secondary story for Zende to break up the monotony of Luna doing stuff, people talking about Luna doing stuff and people talking about the other people who are talking about Luna doing stuff?
