Coronation Street fan favourite looked rather different in a Hollywood movie from the 90s, as they admitted they “didn’t realise how big that movie was going to be”.

Daniel Brocklebank first set foot on the cobbles back in 2014 playing Billy Mayhew. Since then, he’s become a firm favourite and has had his fair share of big storylines – from murder to a heartbreaking drug addiction.

As well as his hard-hitting storylines, Billy has also had several love interests on the soap, including Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash). However, Billy was left heartbroken last year following the death of husband Paul after his battle with MND (motor neurone disease).

What’s more, this year – and much to the shock of fans – it was announced that Daniel will be leaving Coronation Street in a dramatic storyline set to play out on screen.

On Sunday (December 13) Billy actor Daniel appeared on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh to chat about his Coronation Street journey and looming exit. However, the conversation soon turned to the topic of Daniel appearing in the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare In Love from 1998.

A scene from the romantic comedy period movie was then shown on screen, and it featured a younger-looking Daniel starring alongside Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film, which won seven Oscars, three BAFTAS and three Golden Globes, starred Joseph Fiennes as William Shakes- peare. Daniel won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as Sam Gosse.

Back in the studio with Alan, Daniel reflected on filming the Shakespeare In Love. He said: “It was a wonderful film. That cast was incredible.”

He added: “I was 18 when we filmed that and I think at the time, I didn’t realise how big that movie was going to be, or what it would do for my career. Again, another hugely proud moment in my so far, 32-year career.”

Meanwhile, Daniel recently opened up about discovering that soap bosses wanted to write his character out of the show. He told The Mirror: “They said it was purely storyline-based, as is so often the case.

“It felt absolutely right, so I was philosophical about it. It is just a job at the end of the day and there’s no character bigger than the show. We only get a contract for a year at a time and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would expect to be there for life, because I think you’re possibly setting yourself up for a fall.

“Shows evolve and new producers want to bring in new characters and exit characters that they feel have had their time; that’s the nature of it.”
