Happy New Year…I guess. Yep, I’ve got a wee case of the sads, seeing as December saw the final edition of The Farmers Almanac roll off the presses. Debuting in 1818 (!), the Almanac featured long-range weather forecasts and published articles on everything from folklore to homespun wisdom to natural remedies. It was a quintessentially American institution, but it is no more, its demise coming, said its editors, due to the due to the “growing financial challenges of producing and distributing the Almanac in today’s chaotic media environment.” Translation: Stupid internet! And now, let’s all go online and behold Amazon’s best weekend deals!
Sure, you’re now looking at a future without a guide to getting your corn in on time, but you’ll be able to reap a 40% discount on a cordless Shark cordless stick vac ($300/$180). You’ll be oblivious as to what sign the moon’s in this week (it’s Gemini followed by Cancer, Cancer, Leo, Leo and Virgo, Virgo), but Amazon’s $80 markdown on this 8-quart Ninja air fryer means lots of yummy meals are in the stars for you. You won’t know that January’s best days for potty training are the 14th through the 23rd, but you can now easily relieve yourself of those nasty, worn-out sneaks and snag these less-than-half-price Adidas ($36, down from $75).
And so it goes, on and on. To everything there is a season turn, turn, turn. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, a stitch in time saves nine. Out with the old, in with the new. Sans Almanac, we reckon we’ll be able to pick up the pieces and move on, but it won’t be easy. Thanks for helping us through this difficult time, Amazon.
