Emmerdale star teases future of “incredibly dangerous” Kev ahead of death plot
Emmerdale star Christopher Coghill has teased details of the future of his “incredibly dangerous” character Kev Townsend, who was recently revealed to be closely linked to a popular character.
After making his debut on the ITV soap last month, it has slowly been revealed that Kev is in fact the husband of Robert Sugden, with the pair bonding and tying the knot during their stint in prison.
Robert decided to keep this fact a secret from Aaron Dingle, but things will come to a head during next week’s scenes as Kev and Robert are spotted sharing a kiss. Aaron is understandably confused, and demands an explanation from Robert.
Speaking ahead of the dramatic scenes, Coghill shared that his character would be a menace in the village, teasing: “It’s complicated, isn’t it? Kev is unhinged. There are genuine feelings there [for Robert], but they’re not quite what they should be.

“He’s an incredibly dangerous person. Kev wouldn’t have any qualms about physically attacking anybody, apart from possibly Robert… People thought, here’s another baddie – but he isn’t. He’s a criminal, and he’s got psychopathic tendencies.”
Naturally, Kev’s arrival will rankle Aaron and Victoria given their closeness to Robert, but Coghill explained that his character’s relationship with Robert’s closest people – including the Dingles – will not be so clear-cut.
“We [Kev and Aaron] don’t like each other. There is a lot of tension with Aaron. I like working with Danny [Miller],” he said. “There’s quite a nice, little, underlying thing with Victoria. She sees a vulnerability in him and there’s some quite sweet stuff that happens.”
“Aaron’s a Dingle but I wouldn’t like to have a fight with Cain. Charity [and] Chastity, they get involved to a degree, but a lot of it is concentrated between the three of us,” continued the actor.
As the plot developed, it was revealed that Kev was terminally ill, with Robert attempting to keep him on side in order to secure his inheritance. Though he knows that his character will soon pass away, Coghill explained that it didn’t deter him from accepting the part.
“When I was offered it and I was told [that] he dies, I thought, ‘I like Emmerdale and I’d like to be around for a bit’. So I’d want to come and do something that had some potential longevity.
“But when I was told what the character was and [that] they weren’t meeting anybody else I thought, ‘actually this sounds like a right laugh’. One day I can be a psychopath and the next day I’m doing something quite touching, [like] baking cakes.”
Soap aficionados will recognise Coghill from his previous role as Tony King on BBC’s EastEnders, but the actor shared that he wasn’t expecting as big a response to his latest character as with previous roles.
