During that explosive final chapter, Stephen’s descent into madness turned him from a desperate man into a ruthless killer, leaving viewers horrified and captivated in equal measure.

In a stunning 2023 storyline that will go down as one of Corrie’s darkest arcs, Stephen lashed out violently — attacking his own niece, Sarah Barlow, and girlfriend Jenny Connor, before meeting his demise in dramatic fashion when he was struck by Peter Barlow’s car. His death scene, full of tension and heartbreak, marked the end of an era for both the actor and his legendary character.

In one of his last interviews, Todd Boyce reflected on the character’s final moments and the fan speculation surrounding Stephen’s fate. “There was the tiniest bit of what looked like a faint smile when they zipped up the body bag,” he shared with Express UK. “It left some fans wondering if he was really dead — but yes, he’s gone. Maybe he could come back as a long-lost twin brother with a different accent,” he joked, showing his trademark humor even when discussing his sinister role.

Todd admitted he was content to see the storyline reach a proper conclusion. “It was such a great arc, spanning 27 years,” he said proudly. “To have played a villain so fully and to wrap it up neatly — that makes me happy. It’s complete. It’s better to draw a line under it than to keep wondering if I’ll be called back. A lot of people leave in a taxi — I left under a taxi!”

After his departure from Coronation Street, Todd turned his focus to the stage, taking on an entirely different kind of role — a kind-hearted widower named Dwayne in the world premiere of Possum Trot, a heartfelt comedy-drama set in small-town America. The play, written by award-winning playwright Kathy Rucker, follows the life of a diner owner fighting to preserve her community while dealing with family chaos.

The production, scheduled to run in London from November 12 to 29, 2025, was expected to mark a new chapter in Todd’s career — one that sadly, he will never get to see realized.
