Coronation Street’s Carl seals Debbie’s fate with his most abhorrent act yet in early ITVX release
This article contains spoilers for the episode of Coronation Street airing on Wednesday, February 4. It has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.
Just when we thought Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) was about to turn things around, he sank even lower as he sealed sister Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) fate.

Viewers will know that Debbie is awaiting sentencing for drink driving and causing the crash that killed Billy Mayhew. However, she wasn’t actually the one behind the wheel.
Despite this, she entered a guilty plea and is prepared to face the consequences, leaving the real culprit, Carl, free to go about his life.
There isn’t really anyone less deserving of escaping justice than Carl – the serial cheater, scam artist and dangerous driver.
It became especially clear how unfair the whole situation is in tonight’s episode, when Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) told Carl that Debbie deserved everything she got for getting behind the wheel of a car drunk.
When Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) then broke down and admitted his fears that prison would make Debbie’s dementia even worse, Carl decided it was time to do the right thing.
Is that a pig flying over the viaduct?
However, when Debbie caught wind of Carl’s plan to hand himself in, she immediately went out of her way to stop him. As he finally confessed that he had been the one driving and had moved her into the driver’s seat while she was unconscious, Debbie admitted that she had known all along.
With Carl unable to understand why she would take the blame for him and determined to tell the truth, Debbie revealed a secret of her own: She is Carl’s mother (Yes, she is!).
Viewers have known about this for a while now, but the revelation came as a huge shock to Carl.
Debbie explained that she had fallen pregnant at 17 and her dad and Elaine had decided to bring Carl up as their own.
As Debbie tried to explain things, Carl went through a whole host of emotions, but the one that seemed to come out on top was rage. As Debbie grew more distraught, Carl refused to let her comfort him as he lamented about how he’d always known something was off growing up.
When Debbie explained that she wanted to take the blame for him to make up for her actions, Carl insisted that that was only for her benefit and wouldn’t make things up to him.
It was then that he cruelly told her that he wouldn’t be handing himself in and had no intention of visiting her in prison once she was sentenced.
Will Debbie stick to her plan to cover for Carl, even now that he has practically disowned her? Or will she have a change of heart after seeing his cruelty so clearly?
