Coronation Street to kill off classic character after 35 years

Coronation Street might be killing off a classic character of 35 years in scenes airing next month, as their off-screen death is set to have an impact on the cobbles residents. As reported by RadioTimes.com, the people of Weatherfield will be receiving the sad news that Jim McDonald has passed away.

The character was portrayed by actor Charles Lawson between 1989 and 2018. In his final scenes, Jim traded the cobbles for Belfast when he and fellow swindler Hannah Gilmore were caught red-handed by his ex-wife Liz, who they’d scammed out of a large sum of money.

Despite Liz star Beverley Callard, who left the cobbles in 2020, previously shared hopes that her character and Jim could reunite and “just go off into the sunset” together, it seems that it might not happen, after all.

RadioTimes.com reports that Callard is not set to return for the new, rumoured storyline concerning Jim’s death, though another of the McDonald clan will be deeply affected by the news.

Jim’s passing will have an impact on his and Liz’s son Steve, who has only just recently found happiness in a new romance with Cassie Plummer following his wife Tracy’s betrayal.

Digital Spy has reached out to ITV about Jim’s death, but they declined to comment.

Elsewhere on the cobbles, new parents Shona and David Platt receive some big news concerning their daughter Harper.

Corrie fans know that the couple’s baby was revealed to have a tumour growing on her neck during a routine scan. After a delicate surgery, Harper was placed in NICU where she could grow strong before undergoing a new operation to remove the mass.

In scenes airing next week, Shona and David are informed that Harper is now stable enough for the surgery, which is supposed to take place in early March.

Harper was named after Dr Vincent Harper, a visiting surgeon who drove from Bristol to replace Shona’s doctor, stuck in Lithuania.

Dr Harper quickly won the hearts of Corrie fans, with many calling for his stint to be extended, though it was recently confirmed that actor John Hollingworth won’t be returning to Weatherfield.
