Coronation Street star Jane Danson, who plays the iconic character of Leanne Battersby, has responded to claims she’s leaving the show after three decades.

The soap star, 46, has now broken her silence and put the rumours to bed as she stated they were ‘absolute crap’ and ‘pathetic’. She took to her social media where she shared a snapshot of the fake rumours and wrote: “Stop making up stories and quoting cast members saying things that haven’t been said.”

Jane furiously added: “Apparently, I’ve been axed from the show and have written a letter to say how upset I am. First of all, if I have been ‘axed’ surely I would have been told? Had almost 30 years of people feeling the need to say what they want or making up stories, and I’ve never bitten back but I’ve had enough of reading absolute crap. Just stop it, it’s pathetic.”

Jane continued and labelled the rumours ‘damaging’ and ‘unkind’: “And please stop believing the 99 per cent nonsense these sites keep spinning. It can be so damaging and it’s really unkind. Think before you type.” She went on and replied to one fan: “I’ve totally had enough. Not holding back anymore x”

Corrie co-star Jack P Shepherd, who plays another long-standing role as David Platt, wrote back: “I was dead online the other day, Jane” Before the Coronation Street official social media page wrote: “We keep trying to get the fake posts taken down.”

Co-star Georgia Taylor, who portrays Toyah Battersby, also supported Jane and wrote: “Amen to that, sis”, while Corrie writer Jonathan Harvey said: “Every single post I write COMPLETE B******* under. So unnecessary and hurtful.”

Jane first stepped foot onto the soap set in 1997 before she took a break three years later in 2000. Jane re-joined in 2004 but left again two years later, this time for maternity leave. Jane returned in 2007 and has become an iconic part of the cast.

She never takes her part in the soap for granted as she previously told This Morning’s soaps expert Sharon Marshall: “We’ve all done life together, you know? And as you say, we’ve been through good times and bad in life, and you know, it’s just lovely having that support. And it’s the most secure job you’ll get in this industry. I never dreamed it would pan out for so long.

“Even when it’s secure it’s never secure, but I’ve been so grateful for it. But you do change massively, and I never would have anticipated being there that long… all the people you meet along the way just enriches your job, and it’s just been a dream.”

Jane is no stranger to big storylines; from shock affairs and sex work to heartbreaking baby loss and drug abuse. Away from the show, actress Jane has a much more settled life and is married to fellow soap star Robert Beck.

Robert has appeared in the likes of Brookside, Emmerdale and Waterloo Road. He even appeared in Jane’s own soap Coronation Street back in 2008, playing criminal Jimmy Dockerson. During his Emmerdale stint, he played baddie Damon ‘Harry’ Harris in 1999.

Jane and Rob first met in May 1999, at the British Soap Awards. Recalling their first encounter, Jane said: “I’m not the world’s most confident person but I’d had a crush on Rob since I was 15, so I thought, I have to speak to him, it’s fate.”
