Kurt Russell’s Yellowstone Spinoff: The Problem With The Madison Casting Update
If you were looking forward to seeing Kurt Russell in Yellowstone’s The Madison spinoff, hold your horses. The Madison is an upcoming
series developed by Taylor Sheridan that will be the next addition to his rapidly growing Yellowstone franchise, exploring a new family that moves to Montana’s Madison River valley from New York City.
It was recently revealed that Kurt Russell would be joining The Madison as a series regular. He joins an ensemble featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, and more, marking the first Yellowstone franchise TV show to not feature any Dutton family members. Many of the plot details are still unknown, including how it will connect with other shows.
So, here’s the unfortunate part of Kurt Russell’s The Madison casting that wasn’t included in the reports: he’s probably not in season 1. This is an irregular situation, as The Madison announced his role in the series before season 1 has actually premiered, yet the show already wrapped filming several months ago.
The Madison filmed its first season in Texas back in November 2024 and wrapped filming in January 2025. By now, the show is already deep in post-production and could land on streaming by the end of the year, though it’s more likely Paramount will hold back on it until early 2026, given how many Sheridan shows are already coming out in late 2025.
That said, The Madison was preemptively renewed for season 2 already, meaning Paramount has seen part of the show and is predicting a hit. Filming for season 2 is about to begin in Texas this Fall, which is likely when Kurt Russell will join the show, allowing his character to premiere in the second season.
It’s possible that additional scenes could be shot, allowing Kurt Russell to appear in a cameo scene for season 1, but he certainly won’t be a series regular, unless he was secretly cast last year, and they miraculously kept his role hidden for months. There were rumors about him joining the cast in 2024.

Assuming Paramount hasn’t been covering up Kurt Russell’s involvement in The Madison for months, it’s likely he’ll be a regular in season 2. This is entirely speculation, but my guess would be that Russell had a scheduling conflict that prevented him from appearing in season 1, leading to Sheridan saving his character for later.
If The Madison season 1 lands on streaming in early 2026, season 2 will likely be in early 2027. A late 2026 premiere date isn’t impossible, either, given that the show is already beginning filming in 2025. Still, there’s evidently a lengthy post-production process to consider
