EastEnders airs devastating Nigel Bates wedding twist in early iPlayer release
EastEnders has aired a devastating Nigel Bates twist, turning his and Julie’s emotional wedding day into a tragedy. Nigel and Julie recently moved out of Phil’s house after Julie discovered Phil’s secret plan to take his friend to Portugal.
With the pair staying at Peacock Palace, Linda offered to organise Nigel and Julie’s vow renewal the next day. Meanwhile, Phil received a call from the care home, giving them 24 hours to accept a place for Nigel – but he decided to ignore it.

There were poignant scenes in today’s episode as Linda and Elaine helped Nigel and Julie get ready, with Kim agreeing to officiate the vow renewal and Nicola offering Harry’s Barn as the venue.
Nigel headed over to see Phil, assuming he is his best man and not realising that he isn’t invited. Phil didn’t approve of the vow renewal, but put his pride aside and told Linda that Nigel will be there.
Having found out where Nigel was from Linda, Julie arrived to have an honest chat with Phil. He argued that Nigel wasn’t well enough for the wedding and imagined that the ceremony might overwhelm him.
Julie conceded that Phil was right, so went back to the venue to tell the community that Nigel wasn’t coming. But after speaking to Nigel, Phil realised how important the wedding was to him, so he took his friend over in time to get married.
While Nigel panicked when it was time to say his vows, Phil stepped up to help him through, and he and Julie were pronounced husband and wife – again.
Nigel wanted to leave straight after the ceremony, so grateful Julie agreed that Phil should take him home, and that they should both move back into the house.
Phil ran Nigel a bath, then headed downstairs to find Mark and Julie bringing the suitcases back into the house. He tried to broach the topic of the care home place with Julie, but she didn’t want anything to ruin their special day.
Mark then revealed to Phil that it was him who told Julie about the Portugal plan, and he was furious. But what Phil didn’t realise is that Nigel had got into the bath unaccompanied and silently slipped under the water.
