Yellowstone star explains why she was ’emotional’ on set of her new thriller

Kelly Reilly, star of Yellowstone, confesses that returning to the UK for her latest project was an “emotional” journey.

Since 2018, the British actress has been portraying Beth Dutton, the formidable banker and daughter of influential ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), in five seasons of Taylor Sheridan’s popular Paramount drama.

She’ll be reprising this role in the forthcoming spin-off, The Dutton Ranch, which will see Beth and her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) continue to protect their family’s legacy after John’s death.

In the meantime, Reilly will be back on screens sooner than anticipated as she has taken on a fresh role in a dark, gripping murder mystery series coming to Sky in the UK.

The new Welsh thriller Under Salt Marsh features the Yellowstone star as Jackie, a teacher and former detective who collaborates with her old partner to investigate the tragic death of one of her eight year old students, reports the Express.

Also starring Rafe Spall and Jonathan Pryce, the chilling investigation uncovers a cold case involving Jackie from three years prior that could somehow be linked.

Filmed around the Welsh coastline from October 2024-February 2025 and set in the fictional town of Morfa Halen, Reilly felt a stark contrast in her new environment compared to what has been her second home for over half a decade.

“You’re immersed in the place, in the land, and it can’t help but have an effect on you,” she shared with the Radio Times. “You feel the energy of it.

The upcoming series, set to premiere on Sky at the end of January, required Reilly to immerse herself in ice-cold water for a harrowing scene where Jackie discovers the body of a young victim.

Despite the chilling temperatures and torrential rainstorms that play a pivotal role in setting the mood and plot of Under Salt Marsh, the actress didn’t shy away from fully committing to the new challenge.

“I’ve been filming in Montana for years and years,” she shared. “And then I get to go film in these mountains in Britain. And it was really quite an emotional thing.”

She expressed her deep affection for north Wales, reminiscing about her childhood: “I have a real love for north Wales from when I was a kid. We used to go there on holidays, and when I was in primary school, I had this wonderful head teacher who took us on a school trip to climb Mount Snowdon.”

“It was so formative for me. You give yourself over to something greater and you feel humbled by nature and in awe of its beauty. The thrill of insignificance.”

Get ready to witness a fresh facet of Reilly’s acting prowess when the new thriller debuts in less than two weeks.

Also, stay tuned for updates on her eagerly awaited return to the world of Yellowstone, expected later this year.
