BBC Casualty future confirmed as broadcaster shares major update

Fans of Casualty have reason to celebrate as the BBC has delivered promising news about the show’s future.

The medical drama has captivated audiences since 1986, chronicling the dramatic events that unfold amongst staff and patients in the Accident and Emergency department of the fictional Holby City Hospital.

The 39th series concluded earlier this year with considerable drama, followed by a mini-series called Supply and Demand, which served as the opening episodes of series 40.

In May 2025, Casualty was put out to tender, with BBC Studios successfully securing the contract to continue producing the cherished series. The agreement covers three series, with filming scheduled to commence in Spring 2026.

The BBC has confirmed that the programme will remain both set and filmed in Cardiff, reports Wales Online.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, commented: “Casualty is a hugely important, much-loved BBC drama and this tender has ensured it will continue to flourish.”

She added: “It was an extremely competitive process, and we would like to thank the shortlisted producers for their high-quality and comprehensive proposals. We look forward to working with BBC Studios as we build on the show’s long-running success.”

Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning at BBC Cymru Wales, stated: “Casualty will be supercharging the portrayal of Wales to the UK and beyond and BBC Cymru Wales are delighted. Casualty always breaks new ground, and it has done so again.

“The sheer scale of the portrayal of Wales – in character and place is a game changer. BBC Studios fired our imaginations, and we look forward to where they take the world of Casualty next.”

Fans of the medical drama won’t have to wait much longer for its return, with the new series set to air on January 10.

The gripping final episode left viewers on tenterhooks about the fate of Ngozi Okoye (played by Adesuwa Oni), whose plans to leave with her son Obi took a tragic turn.

News of the show’s return sparked a flurry of comments from eager fans. One Facebook user responded to the announcement saying: “Will be interested to see what happens to Ngozi Okoye given the incident with the alcohol relapse at the airport at the end of the last series – what a cliffhanger! I hope she pulls through and has a happy life with Nicole Pipe.”

Another fan expressed their relief, commenting: “Thank goodness. Something good to watch on Saturday evenings again. It’s been such a long break so hope everyone has had a good rest. xx”

While another added: “Thank god for that, missed it loads, Saturday night tv just isn’t the same without it.”
