Coronation Street’s David Platt ’emotional’ as star teases major Christmas return
Jack P Shepherd has given an insight into the ITVs soap’s Platt family Christmas this year

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has revealed that David Platt will be left ’emotional’ this Christmas as a familiar face makes a return – a year after they waved goodbye to the cobbles.

There was joy and sadness in the Platt family during the 2024 festive season as their matriarch, Gail, married Jesse Chadwick and shared some emotional moments with her family, particularly her children David, Sarah and Nick, before leaving the cobbles behind for France.

It was no secret that actress Helen Worth would be bowing out of her long-running role in the ITV soap on Christmas Day,50 years after making her debut, as she announced the surprise news earlier in 2024.

In a heartfelt video shared on social media after her last episode aired, Helen thanked fans for their support over the past five decades. She said: “Hello, all of you. It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to say, ta ta. It’s been a fabulous 50 years, and I just wanted to thank all of you, some of you who may have been watching for 50 years.

“Is there anybody? And those of you who’ve been watching for a few years. Thank you. Thanks for coming on the journey with me. I‘ve had a wonderful time. I’ve loved it all. All the stories, and of course, working with the wonderful Platts, which, for me, is what it’s all about. And there’ll be more Platt stories, and I hope you’ll be watching.”

It since been revealed that once year after she left Weatherfield, Helen will reprise the role of Gail for a cameo, sharing a festive message to her loved ones and it’s expect to be particularly “emotional” for her son David, who is also celebrating his birthday.

“She pops up and makes a bit of a guest appearance, which is nice and lovely,” Jack, who has played David for 25 years, told The Sun. “She pops up and she’s sending a Christmas message to the Platts!

“And obviously it’s David’s birthday, so she’s saying that.” He added: “It kind of gets David, I think he’s a bit emotional about it… Because it’s his mum and he has this weird relationship with his mum doesn’t he. It’s sort of like this love to hate.”
