For fans worried that the Rip and Beth Yellowstone sequel might stall out in development limbo, having been pretty quiet for the past few months, well giddy up, because there’s finally some genuinely good news. The Dutton Ranch — the long-anticipated continuation of the franchise centered on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler — is not only moving forward, it’s well into production and steadily expanding its scope.

Filming on The Dutton Ranch has been underway since August, making it one of several Taylor Sheridan-created projects currently shooting in and around Fort Worth, as per local reports. It’s part of an unusually busy stretch for Sheridan, whose Texas footprint now includes Lioness Season 3, The Madison Season 2 (Season 1 hasn’t even aired yet), and Landman, which is nearing the halfway point of its second season on Paramount+.

The biggest creative update comes from the growing cast. Alongside returning stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, The Dutton Ranch recently added Jai Courtney in a key role, as another rancher. He joins previously announced additions Ed Harris and Annette Bening, giving the series a heavyweight ensemble right out of the gate. The Dutton Ranch’s logline reads:
The Dutton saga concluded last year when the series finale for Yellowstone aired, leaving only two Dutton children alive. With The Dutton Ranch set to follow Beth, the youngest Dutton sibling, Kacey (Luke Grimes), has not been left out in the cold. The character has also gotten his own spin-off titled Y: Marshals.
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence,” reads the show’s official logline. In the new procedural, Kayce will try to balance his new job while raising a family. Franchise mastermind Taylor Sheridan returns to executive produce both shows.
