Having thought she would never work again not only was she employed but she also found herself nominated for Villain of the Year at the Inside Soap awards for her chilling performance.

She admitted she was “scared” she would “never walk into a theatre again and thought “this is the end of my career” as she lay in hospital.

However the biggest blow was yet to come when she learned a girl from the production office who accompanied her to the hospital wasn’t there for moral support – but rather to see if she could recover in time for the next performance. When it became apparent her recuperation would take some time she was axed from the show.

“I had been soaring…And in a heartbeat, it was gone,” she wrote, admitting she was terrified of being forgotten and losing everything she had built

She explained it happened during the show’s technical rehearsal. As they called a break, she went to walk off the stage and didn’t see the trap door which had inadvertently been left open. “One moment, I was on solid ground, and the next, nothing. I fell. The 59-year-old recalled the incident in her autobiography 40 “Miserable” Years explaining the accident happened shortly after she left BBC soap EastEnders to rehearse the play Vernon God Little in the Young Vic.
