Calling it “a grenade dropped in the middle of everything,” McVey revealed that the decision sparked heated debates among the creative team. “I remember when it was first mentioned — it was almost said as a joke,” she confessed. “But then suddenly, people started taking it seriously. I was so angry. I said, we can’t do that — it breaks faith with the viewers!”

McVey argued that Becky’s shocking reappearance undermined the emotional truth of Lisa’s grief, which had been one of the show’s most moving arcs. “We suffered alongside Lisa,” she explained. “Her heartbreak felt real, and bringing Becky back from the dead risked making the police look either corrupt or completely incompetent. It just didn’t make sense narratively or emotionally.”

But despite her objections, the controversial twist went ahead — and the reaction was explosive. Some fans praised the drama and unpredictability of the plot, while others felt betrayed by the decision to reverse Becky’s death. McVey recalled that she and fellow writer Ella Greenhill were eventually tasked with rewriting and refining the storyline to make it work. “We hated the idea at first,” she admitted. “But we thought, if we have to do it, let’s make it the best version possible — let’s give it emotional weight and close the gaps in logic.”

The writers ultimately leaned into the chaos, creating a tense, grief-filled arc that saw Lisa and Carla’s relationship implode under Becky’s manipulations. The fallout has been immense, with Corrie insiders hinting that the heartbreak for Lisa and Carla is only the beginning — and that future episodes may bring tragedy for more residents, including Shona and David Platt, whose lives will intersect disastrously with Becky’s dark return.
